Tough guy: This past year, Jim Sofie fought melanoma and chronic leukemia with chemotherapy and — cold water. The organizer of an annual polar bear plunge at Lake Wenatchee says he never missed a day of his weekly lake plunges during six months of chemotherapy for the diseases. The reason: “I feel refreshed when I get out of there,” he said. Sofie, 77, came into The Wenatchee World recently to get the word out that he’s holding his 20th annual polar bear plunge at 2 p.m. Jan. 1. It will be held near the south entrance of Lake Wenatchee State Park.

The event drew more than 125 participants last year, plus a hundred spectators. Sofie warns people that they’ll need a Discover Pass to park in the lot, which fills up fast.
There will be a hot bowl of chili for participants at a nearby restaurant. Need more incentive? Sophie promises the lake temperature will be between 36 and 37 degrees on Jan. 1.

Say no to Black Friday: So, you want to buy some electronics but you missed Black Friday. Don’t despair. According to Oren Etzioni, a University of Washington computer science professor, that probably wasn’t the best time to buy electronics anyway. The New York Times late last month quoted Etzioni as saying that the best time to buy those pricey items is in early December.
The founder of an airline-ticket price predicting system has developed a complex algorithm to help consumers figure out the best time to buy. According to the Times, he studies current and historical prices, information about new models and rumors about new product introductions.
Want advice on when to buy — or not buy — specific electronics throughout the year? His website, www.decide.com, gives you a thumbs up or a thumbs down.
Happy birthday, Link: On Dec. 16, it will be 20 years since Link introduced it’s buses to Wenatchee and the surrounding areas. It was a big deal.
12/16/1991
There was a parade of buses from the Wenatchee High School area to the Wenatchee Center for a dedication ceremony. About 150 people turned out. According to a Wenatchee World story dated Dec. 16, 1991, people “waved, snapped photographs and cheered … Sanda claus and Leavenworth residents dressed in lederhosen mingled with the crowd.”
This year, Link officials are celebrating in several ways. They’re offering free rides on Wenatchee and East Wenatche trolleys during December. And they’re offering riders in all venues a chance to win prizes, including Kindle Fire tablets. For more information on the contest and a list of prizes and rules, visit www.linktransit.com.
