Use Antispyware When Your Computer Gets Sick

If your computer gets slower, you see strange icons in the system tray, and random error messages pop up, you might have a spyware infection.  Spyware can do considerable damage to your computer, and possibly even open you up to identity theft.  Getting rid of it quickly is crucial to protecting your information.  While it is possible to remove spyware manually, it is not easy.  Use an antispyware program to clean up your computer and get it back under your control.

Malicious Software Tries To Steal Your Information

There are a lot of different types of malicious programs out there that you have to defend your computer against, and spyware is a very common and very dangerous type.  Spyware sneaks onto your computer and tries to steal private information like account numbers and passwords.  It may also try to convince you to buy an “upgrade” program, which will do nothing except give the scammers your credit card information.  Many malware programs will download and install other malware, or disable your security software leaving your computer vulnerable to other Internet threats, including viruses. Some spyware will either by design or by accident, simply destroy your computer by deleting files it needs to run.

Spyware Invades by Tricking You

Spyware does not propagate like viruses, by attaching itself to an executable file.  Spyware tends to be the executable file, which means that you need to install it to have it infect your system.  But the creators of malicious software know that you won’t install just anything on your computer, so they use trickery to convince you that you are installing something that you want.

A common method is to present you with a media file, usually a video that appeals to you.  When you try to play the media, you get a message that you are missing a vital software tool needed to play it, usually a codec.  If you follow the instructions to install the codec, you are actually installing malware.

Another common method of getting spyware on your computer is the fun toolbar.  You will be encouraged to download and install a toolbar that will give you bonuses in an online game.  But many toolbars are actually Trojan Horses, and hide downloader’s that will install spyware on your system.  In general, avoid installing any extra toolbars in your Internet browser.

Spyware Removal is Never a Simple Task

While getting spyware is easy, removing it is not.  The creators of malware don’t want you to get rid of their software, so they do not provide any way to uninstall it.  Some toolbars may come with uninstall tools, but they will leave vital pieces of the downloader’s on your computer.

Manually removing spyware is no picnic, either.  You need to be able to stop processes, edit the registry, and find hidden files on your computer.  You also need to know what spyware your system has been infected with so you know what processes to stop and what registry keys and files to delete.  Where there is one spyware program, there is often more, so you may have to repeat the process over and over to finish the job.

Save yourself the trouble and find a good antispyware program.  The only caveat is that you need to make sure your antispyware is from a reputable company.  Some malware actually disguises itself as antispyware.  But you can get your computer back under your own control.  Just be aware of what you are downloading and keep your security software running at all times.
