By PoliceOne Staff KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Dash cam shows a Kalamazoo sheriff’s deputy engage in the "fight for his life" after being shot in the arm during a traffic stop. William Wright, 28, launched what would become a seven-hour ordeal for police when he fired the first shots Friday night, according to WOOD TV, as Deputy Jeff Nichols and Reserve Deputy Jeremy Conley approached his vehicle for a traffic stop. Immediately dodging bullets — and taking one hit to the arm — Nichols returned fire as the vehicle fled, authorities said. Conley also returned fire, but is not seen on video.
After a series of strange pursuits, police apprehended Wright, his brother Christopher Wright, a passenger, and accomplice Jessica Carpenter. The brothers abandoned their vehicle after it crashed and then got inside a Jeep Liberty, which also crashed — into a house, according to M Live. Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Pali Matyas said that within 15 to 20 minutes after police tracked William Wright to the garage, "there was an explosion in the garage and the door flew off and the suspect somehow started a car that was in the garage." Wright, "ramming fences over" and traveling through yards, was eventually stopped and arrested on an interstate in Battle Creek, and Christopher Wright, 25, was located nearby in the back of a pickup truck.
"This thing was bizarre," Matyas said. "It just kept going and going and going … This was a very intense six hours."
William Wright faces 9 felony counts ranging from resisting and obstructing to attempted murder, a charge which alone could earn him a life sentence in prison. A 13-year veteran with the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department, Dep. Nicholas was treated at the hospital for his gunshot wound and released, but certainly felt the danger of a situation involving armed, combative subjects. "These officers were very aware of the fact that these suspects still had the firearm and that at any point we could end up in another firefight," Sheriff Fuller said.
