As the nation grapples to understand the domestic terrorist act that recently took place in Charleston, South Carolina, I find myself wondering why all the hoopla on removing the confederate flag? Black men and women have been killed, persecuted, and terrorized in these United States of America for centuries, and this has absolutely nothing to do with the flag that currently resides on government buildings. This symbol is not the ultimate reason Black men, women, and children are continuously gunned down and hunted in our neighborhoods on a daily basis. Systemic racism, control, and the almighty dollar are the root causes of this ever present violent uprising.
Constant rhetoric, calls for marches, and national debates to have the flag removed will not remedy the racist sore that prevails in our land of the free and home of the brave. The confederate flag should remain on government monuments to remind Black America of the reason why we were trafficked to this country, and why it is imperative we change our frame of thinking. By removing the flag, we will truly begin to believe the façade that all men are created equal. Now more than ever, we as a people need to have a hard look at our communities, commitment to culture, and economic development. When will we rise up and become absolutely incensed at our treatment in America and force revolutionary change?
Once we understand our true financial power, will we ever see the required justice and respect that is due? Think about the Montgomery bus boycotts of the 1950’s. Do you think the racist Jim Crow establishment in the south became tired of us walking to work and carpooling? Hell no! The direct hit to their pockets is what crippled the transportation system and made the establishment open their eyes to our monetary power. We hold a financial power that we do not recognize and constantly fall prey to high unemployment, lack of ownership, and credit mismanagement. Once Black America understands and exercises our monetary dominance, we will then experience a shift in overall cultural respect.
Bree Newsome, the 30-year-old woman who scaled the South Carolina flag pole to remove the confederate flag, is being hailed a hero. I say to Ms. Newsome, don’t worry about removing the flag and let it fly high for all nations and countries to remember its symbolic heritage. It is an historic representation and reminder of the current landscape we live in. Where 9 innocent people were killed and shot dead while attending bible study in church. This is our America–that is not pretty, forgiving nor kind.
