AT&T played a key role in helping the National Security Agency spy on U.S. internet traffic. That’s according to a report by the New York Times. The article cites documents provided by whistleblower and former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. The documents date from 2003 to 2013 and detail the telecom company’s relationship with the NSA. The New York Times, citing the files, says AT&T handed over billions of e-mails to the NSA in that time period. The company also reportedly offered technical assistance in carrying out a secret court order to wiretap all online communications at the United Nations headquarters, which is an AT&T customer. According to the report, AT&T installed surveillance equipment in at least 17 of its internet hubs on American soil more than any other telecom company. The documents describe the NSA’s relationship with the company as “highly collaborative,” citing AT&T’s “extreme willingness to help.” An AT&T spokesperson told the New York Times it does not comment on issues of national security.
