A Salvadoran citizen is on the list of the 10 cybercriminals most wanted by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation. The fugitive, identified as Carlos Enrique Perez Melara, 35, is charged with hacking the private communications of hundreds and even thousands of victims, according to the FBI. Perez Melara ran a Web site that offered customers a way to “catch a cheating lover” by means of a spyware program disguised as an electronic greeting card. The program periodically sent e-mails to his “Loverspy” customers with the private messages of the victims along with usernames, passwords and lists of the Web sites they visited. Perez Melara came to the United States with a tourist visa and later obtained a student visa to take university courses in San Diego, California. The FBI offers a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading directly to the arrest and conviction of Perez Melara.Authorities went after the accused starting in July 2005, when a warrant for his arrest was issued in California after he was charged withmultiple cybercrimes. The list of the most wanted cybercriminals is headed by a Russian citizen identified as Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev, for whom a reward of $3 million is offered. […]
