Kurdish Youths Attend International Cyber Security Hacking Event

ERBIL – Kurdish programmers and hackers have competed in a two-day workshop in Erbil to hack a website designed by a cyber security expert.   The US Consulate in Erbil joined up with organisations AngleHack and HackaGlobal to hold the event that was attended by Internet security expert Jamie Woodruff via Skype.   The participants attempted to hack a website designed by Woodruff. Hersh Babakir, a young Kurdish hacker succeeded in decoding its user name and password within minutes, the HackaErbil website revealed. The winner will have the opportunity to participate in an Internet security-training course in the US. The Kurdistan Regional Government has expressed its determination to embrace technology and experts believe that investing in local talent is essential in realising the ambition. The contest, which ends on Sunday included 70 people, distributed to 11 teams, as the winning team will receive a prize, which is 12 months internship in the United States. The competition takes place under the auspices of two trade groups in Erbil, “Zain” and “Goran,” with the support of the US Consulate, “AngelHack” and “GlobalHack” British and American organizations.
