Rise in crimes against women in Odisha’s Twin City

Twin city (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack) recorded highest number of crime cases last year in comparison to the last three years but Commissionerate Police claims that they have detected over 95 per cent of cases related to crimes against women, a much improved effort by the personnel at crime detection. Briefing media persons after the annual crime review meeting at the Commissionerate police headquarter office here today, Commissioner of Police Dr R P Sharma said the twin city recorded 440 cases of crimes against women (Rape, Kidnapping, 498-A, Eve-teasing, Molestation etc) in 2014 against 320 last year- an increase of 36.36 percent. Dr Sharma said despite counselling and a video documentary on safeguarding women in the state, there has been a record of 70 percent rise with 138 rapes being reported in 2014 against 81 in 2013. Minors are the worst affected, he added. In Bhubaneswar Urban Police District (UPD), there were 72 rape cases reported in 2014 against 51 in 2013, 56 in 2012 and 35 in 2011.
