DAVIS, Calif. — Two campus police officers were placed on leave after using OC spray during a student protest, university officials said.
After a video circulated Friday showing an officer spray a group, UC Davis Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi was called to resign, according to the LA Times. "I pledge to take the actions needed to ensure this does not happen again," Katehi said.
According to a university spokeswoman, the two officers on paid administrative leave were identified as having deployed pepper spray after video was reviewed.
Police said they tried to clear a camp of Occupy Wall Street demonstrators Friday, and the decision to spray came as the protest unfolded.
"The students had encircled the officers," UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said. "They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out."
Ten arrests were made and two were taken to a local hospital for treatment.
"Videos taken during Friday’s arrests showed that the two officers used pepper spray on peacefully seated students," the school said.
