The Chandigarh Police has noted a steep rise in cases relating to ATM and credit card fraud in the first seven months of the year. The police have also recorded an overall rise in the number of the cases relating to cyber crime as compared to previous years. As many as 72 cases related to cyber crime were registered by the cyber cell of the Chandigarh Police, of which a majority are ATM and credit card fraud. The number of such cases registered till July 30 this year are double the total number last year. According to the police records, 31 cases are related to credit card scams and ATM fraud such as money withdrawals by fraudsters posing as fake bank agents. Cyber crime analysts say the steep rise in the number of the cases is an alarming trend. Kuldeep Kumar, a city-based cyber crime expert, said fraudsters are taking the advantage of the lack of awareness among the common people. “The police should hold awareness camps, especially for senior citizens, because in many cases they become targets of such fraudsters,” added Kumar.
