Alleged credit card fraud foiled by cautious clerk

REGINA — A watchful Regina gas station clerk has foiled what police believe to be an attempted credit card scam — one that could have implications that reach beyond this province. According to information from the Regina Police Service, three men from Montreal were arrested this week after police acted on a complaint brought to them by the clerk. On Monday, the clerk reported that two men tried to buy a prepaid credit card using prepaid Visa cards. The clerk, suspicious, challenged the men on the attempted buy and they left the store without completing the purchase. Officers were able to trace the men’s vehicle to a rental agency which then notified police when the vehicle was returned. Police were able to, at that point, take one suspect into custody. As a result of that arrest, police said they obtained evidence that led them to believe the suspect could be involved in either the manufacturing or use of fraudulent credit cards. Further investigation led police to a local hotel where two more suspects were arrested when they tried to flee.
