Charity founder ordered to prison
MEDFORD — The founder of an Islamic charity in Oregon must go to prison while awaiting the outcome of his appeal on federal tax fraud and conspiracy charges.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld a lower court ruling denying a stay of the sentence for Pirouz Sedaghaty, also known as Pete Seda, while his appeal is heard.
A jury found Sedaghaty guilty of helping to smuggle $150,000 to Saudi Arabia through the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation in Ashland. Prosecutors argued that the money was meant for Islamic fighters in Chechnya, but Judge Michael Hogan ruled that they failed to prove that aspect.
Sedaghaty was sentenced to 33 months in prison. He must report Feb. 29.
Craigslist sex posts lead to charges
PORTLAND — A Portland man was arrested on charges that he put ads on craigslist and made other online posts that appeared to be from his former girlfriend inviting men to contact her for sex, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office said.
Andre Flom, 31, was charged with computer crime and identity theft.
The sheriff’s office said posts began in October after he was convicted of domestic violence charges. The woman was not identified.
Deputies said the posts gave her name, phone number and address.
More than 20 men knocked on her door the nights after postings with her address appeared.
Posts also invited people to dig up her plants and haul away a play structure.
Two prison inmates catch chickenpox
PORTLAND — State corrections officials say two inmates have been diagnosed with chickenpox at a prison in northeast Portland. Prison and health officials are working to prevent the spread of the highly contagious disease.
State Corrections Department spokeswoman Jennifer Black said Thursday that neither of the unidentified inmates has needed treatment outside the Columbia River Correctional Institution.
Black said the state Public Health Division has been notified.
She said visiting hours will continue on the regular schedule.
Man sentenced in child porn case
DALLAS — A Polk County man has been sentenced to nearly 67 years in prison for possession and distribution of child pornography.
The county district attorney’s office said David Klinepier, 36, was sentenced Thursday.
He pleaded guilty in November to 20 counts of first-degree encouragement of child abuse.
