Jonathan Wynn-Strachan, a music student and Miami native, founded the non-profit community service project, 60 Minutes of Art, in 2013. Jonathan became involved in the arts while attending Charles Drew Middle School and showed great prospect for the theatre and visual arts. As President of the non-profit, he is in charge of creating lesson plans for upcoming workshops, acting as instructor for classes, as well as actively reaching out to sponsors to support this hands on organization. 60 Minutes of Art is a student based organization, which takes the visual and performing arts into inner city neighborhoods that have lost funding or simply do not have access to creative programs.
While in high school, Jonathan was faced with a traumatic experience which was not only life changing, but made him realize the strong role art played in his life. It was then he decided to start 60 Minutes of Art. The idea was to start a program that would serve as a positive outlet for children ages 6 to 13 in Miami, Florida communities that were identified as target zones and would benefit the most from this platform. Jonathan’s ultimate goals are to give back to his community and educate children on the unique benefit of artistic expression. “I am given the opportunity to help and impact so many children and the greatest joy is having kids learn something new and possibly provide a new talent,” said Jonathan. Breaking down the walls of ignorance, fear and stereotypes gives 60 Minutes of Art continued purpose.
Jonathan’s motivation comes from individuals who support and play the part in making the dream of artistic equality a reality. Working with students who are eager to learn and explore makes this community organization worthwhile. Like many non-profits, the volunteers who diligently work to make positive strides towards artistic expression are greatly appreciated.
Jonathan, also credits his mother who worked as a single parent to instill strong academic values and made education a top priority. This strong work ethic pushed Jonathan to become an overall honor student throughout high school. His mentor, Mrs. Elina Gayol, provided unwavering support and dedication, which increased Jonathan’s drive as well as pushed others to make artistic sparks.
Jonathan plans on attending Miami-Dade Community College on a full scholarship and major in non-profit operations and visual performing arts. He is dedicated to his community and encouraging kids to learn one note at a time.
