Computer theft leads to man’s arrest

Jeremy Alexis Maldonado, 32, was arrested Wednesday on a warrant charging him with grand theft and fraudulent use of a receipt, according to a Winter Haven police report.

Maldonado was taken into custody at his home in Orlando. According to the report, detectives believe the arrest will help solve several other grand-theft cases involving Walmart stores, under similar circumstances and involving investigations by other law enforcement agencies in the area.

In the Winter Haven theft, Maldondo is accused of using a security key that unlocks the harnesses securing computers on store display. Once obtaining the merchandise, he allegedly used a fraudulent receipt to exit the store.

According to the report, a clerk in the electronics department at Walmart noticed the items missing right after the suspect left the area.

Witnesses were able to get the tag number of the vehicle the suspect used after leaving the store and investigators later learned that the vehicle is registered to Maldonado’s mother.

According to the report, when detectives arrived at the Orlando home, Maldonado had the security key in his pocket and the vehicle used in connection with the theft in Winter Haven was at the home.
