A Cortlandt man has been accused of stealing credit cards from unlocked cars and using the cards throughout Westchester County, police said. Omar Hassan, 24, was arrested on August 19 after an investigation by state police in Brewster, who received several reports from Putnam County residents who had credit cards and other valuable items stolen from their unlocked cars. Police said the stolen credit cards were then used at various locations in southern Westchester. Hassan was charged with first-degree identity theft, a felony, and two counts of third-degree unlawful possession of personal identification information, a misdemeanor. Police said numerous agencies, including the Mount Pleasant and Peekskill police departments, and state police in Somers and Cortlandt, have charges pending against Hassan, whose parole is in the process of being revoked. Hassan is on parole after serving time in Franklin Correctional Facility for felony convictions on grand larceny and forgery charges, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Hassan was arraigned in Southeast Town Court and is being held at the Putnam County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail or $20,000 bond, police said.
