LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) – Credit cards are one of the most common forms of payment, but are also an easy source of private information for thieves. Credit card fraud damages are costing Americans more than a billion dollars a year, and that amount is growing according to a report from the Federal Trade Commission. Scott Dickerson from Texas Bank and Trust said the process for customers of replacing cards and securing accounts is getting faster and easier, but there are still steps to making sure you’re secured. “Notify the card issuer our bank they should notify one of the credit reporting agency’s, and put a fraud alert on their account,” Dickerson said. Dickerson adds by putting a fraud alert out, that will also prevent thieves from opening new accounts with your personal information they skimmed from a card or other places. Better Business Bureau CEO Mechele Mills said credit card applications are a prime source for thieves to get a person’s information. “You know lots of very juicy information for a hacker so if you’re mailing something like that it is it is very valuable information and you want to make sure you go to the right place,” Mills said.
