DPS says teacher tried to pawn netbook

DETROIT (WXYZ) – Detroit Public Schools says a veteran teacher with 16 years experience has been suspended for trying to pawn a district computer.

Karen Drysdale-Oriucci is accused of trying to sell the netbook she received on December 17 at American Jewelry and Loan in Detroit. The district says the pawn shop refused to pay for the device before confiscating it and contacting the district.

Detroit Public School’s Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb praised the owners of American Jewelry and Loan for preventing the theft, saying “The dual threat of being caught by the latest high tech security, by law-abiding and cooperating merchants, or both, should send the clearest signal yet that no one is going to illegally profit at the expense of our schools and our students.”

DPS says their netbooks are protected from theft by state-of-the art security software which can track the device and remotely disable it. They are also engraved with the DPS “I’m In” logo and other anti-theft measures. School officials say white tape had been placed over the property sticker on Drysdale-Oriucci’s computer.

Drysdale-Oriucci is suspended with pay pending a disciplinary hearing.
