Ernest “Ernie” Davis was born on December 14, 1939, in New Salem, Pennsylvania. A three-time All-American halfback, Davis led Syracuse University to the national championship during his sophomore year. In 1961, Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy and the first black athlete to be chosen first overall pick in the NFL Draft in 1962. Unfortunately, he never played a professional game due to his untimely passing from leukemia at the age of 23. Davis was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
