FDIC Warns of Phishing Scams

December 12, 2011 By Johnell Johnson

Scammers have a new target and they are hoping to cash in big if you fall for their trap. They latest scam involves the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. (FDIC). That organization is warning banks of another strand of phishing attacks claiming to come from the FDIC.

The FDIC sent out an alert that warned that the e-mails appear to be coming from “insurance@fdic.gov,” “subscriptions@fdic.gov,” “alert@fdic.gov” and “accounts@fdic.gov.”

The fake e-mails come with various subject lines like “FDIC: Your business account,” “FDIC: About your business account,” “Insurance coverage of your business account,” or other similar variations.

Once you open it up, the e-mails include a malicious link, which claims to offer consumers critical information about their financial institutions. The email says: “We have important news regarding your bank. This includes information on the acquiring bank (if applicable), how your accounts and loans are affected, and how vendors can file claims against the receivership.”
If you receive an email like this, the FDIC says recipients of the e-mails should be mindful of any electronic correspondence that appears to come from the FDIC. The FDIC also stresses that it does not issue unsolicited e-mails to consumers or business account holders.
