Hacker disables city of Providence site

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Sept. 26 (UPI) — A computer hacker managed disabled the server that hosts the official Web site for the city of Providence, R.I., a spokesman for the mayor said.

David Ortiz, spokesman for Mayor Angel Taveras, said the hacker gained access to InMotionHosting’s server early Sunday and disabled the city site for several hours, The Providence Journal reported.

Ortiz said city staff members were able to restore the site by 9:30 a.m. He said the hacker, who did not compromise the city’s internal servers, data or e-mail, was targeting the server and not the city, the Boston Globe said.
