Hacker Group ‘Anonymous’ Gun For Brazil Banks; Itau Internet Banking Briefly Shut Down

The Brazilian offshoot of worldwide hacktivist group Anonymous is setting its sights on Brazilian banks.

According to a report in Folha de São Paulo, the country’s leading daily, Anonymous is calling the operation Operation Weeks Payment, or #OpWeeksPayment in the Twitterverse. The act is against political corruption and is supposed to run all week, with the idea to shut internet banking for at least 12 hours at various big name banks.

Brazil’s leading private bank, Itau (ITUB) was the first target on Monday, getting shut down for six minutes starting at 10:05 local time. The attacks were done from three different networks. The bank’s press office said in a note that their internet banking site was down but did not give a reason for the problem.

Anonymous Brazil said that Itau was getting attacked again in the afternoon.  The team’s Twitter account AntiSecBrTeam promised at least 12 hours of shut downs.  Read one post this afternoon, “ah, the smell of fire….And the week has only just begun!”
