April 18, 2012 – Pacific Coast League (PCL) Fresno Grizzlies
Fresno, Calif. – Eric Hacker already owns the Fresno Grizzlies’ single-season wins record, which he set in 2010. At this rate, he could surpass it easily by the middle of the 2012 season.
Hacker twirled seven shutout innings to pick up his third win in as many starts as the Grizzlies (10-3) defeated the Reno Aces (4-9) 4-2 on Tuesday night in the first game of the four-game series at Chukchansi Park.
The right-hander struck out three and allowed just three hits and no walks. He improves to 3-0 on the season with a 2.00 ERA. The three hits allowed were the fewest hits surrendered by Hacker in a start since April 14th, 2011 with the Rochester Red Wings.
Both teams were locked in a scoreless game until Charlie Culberson drove in his seventh run of the season in the sixth inning. RogerKieschnick scored the game’s first run when Culberson drove him in from second on a single. Kieschnick hit a double to reach base. Conor Gillaspie attempted to score on Kieschnick’s double from first, but was thrown out at the plate.
The Aces replaced starter Joe Martinez in the seventh with outfielder-converted-pitcher, Jason Lane. The Grizzlies proceeded to have their best offensive inning off of Lane, hitting for the cycle. Jackson Williams hit a one-out solo home run to give the Grizzlies a two-run lead. Pinch-hitter Brock Bond followed with a double to right-center and was later driven in by Francisco Peguero on a triple. Conor Gillaspie capped the inning with a single to center field to plate Peguero and make it 4-0.
Former Grizzly and Aces shortstop Cody Ransom delivered a no-doubt, two-run home run in the top of the ninth to cut the Grizzlies lead to 4-2. Matt Yourkin, who entered in relief to start the ninth, closed out thegame, however, with no further damage.
Martinez was tagged with loss after allowing one run on eight hits in six innings pitched. It was the first time Martinez has faced the Grizzlies since being traded from the San Francisco Giants organization in 2010.
The two teams will continue their four-game series with a quick turnaround on Wednesday for a 12:05 pm game. Fresno’s Andrew Kown will square-off against Zach Kroenke of Reno.
