Winnipeg police are investigating after a person broke into a downtown apartment building and stole mail. It happened at 265 Portage Avenue on Sunday. Residents were notified the next day by building management. Residents were given a notice advising them of what happened, and told to call their credit card companies to report the incident. A resident called the break-in concerning, especially since there are two doors that require security codes for entrance. The Winnipeg Police Service said it sees sporadic instances of theft from mailboxes in apartment buildings, but calls it uncommon. The Winnipeg chapter of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said this kind of theft is more common at community mail boxes. President Glenn Bennett called community mailboxes a one-stop shop for thieves. Bennett said there have even been instances where a thief cuts off the bottom of the community mailbox, and steals the entire top. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre said stolen mail can lead to identity theft. RCMP said anyone who thinks they might be a victim of identity theft, including people with stolen mail, should follow four steps. First, it said the incident should be reported to local police.
