Importance of Black History Month

February 1^st marks the beginning of black history month. Even though it has been several years since the election of the first African-American President, the recognition and celebration of Black history continues to be necessary and important. The beauty of African American history nourishes our community. The essence of Black history is one of empowerment, which exposes the truth of the hidden and offers a prism through which we can see our journey and present-day condition. We must strive to keep the tradition of celebrating our heritage in order to counter centuries of reverse psychology that has led us to believe that all-great cultivations were made by Caucasians.

Learning the truth about our history will help us transform our indoctrinated thinking. It is imperative for us to know who we are and who we were–a deeply spiritual people intimately connected to our ancestors, mind, body and spirit. “If you don’t know where you come from, you won’t know where you’re going!

Atlanta Free Speech will celebrate Black History Month by encouraging its readers to explore known and unknown black history leaders and historical events. Throughout the month of February, AFS will be highlighting these various history makers. The more we learn about our history, the more we will realize who and what we can become.
