Kids and cellphones: a different perspective

Article explained reasons for child cellphone usage

After reading the article titled, “When should kids get their first cellphone?” by Claudia Buck [seattletimes.com, Sept. 28] my thoughts surrounding cellphone usage within the 9-to-12-year-old population shifted.

Technology is advancing at an incredible rate during this modern age; maybe too quickly. I received my first cellphone when I was 16 years old. To hear there are children expecting a cellphone at age 9 makes me feel uncomfortable.

In my experience with children, providing them with a cellphone seems to push children toward a cyber-world consisting of always “being connected” and rarely appreciating the beauty of an outdoor world or social interactions such as face-to-face dialogue.

Buck’s article pointed out a few great ideas as to why tweens should have a cellphone if the child has proved to be responsible enough.

I enjoyed how Buck provided readers with suggestions of setting boundaries with cellphone usage for their children. Thank you for opening my eyes to a different perspective regarding this topic; now I can understand why some parents choose to buy their child a cellphone, with security in mind.
