Amy Klobuchar is proposing federal cybersecurity protections for drinking-water systems following cyberattacks against more than 30 utilities in Minnesota.

According to the proposal, the legislation would establish security standards and authorize federal infrastructure funding to help water systems replace vulnerable equipment and strengthen their defenses.

The recent Minnesota attacks targeted automated controls used to operate pumps, wells and other utility equipment. Officials said drinking-water quality was not affected, but the incidents renewed concerns about cybersecurity at smaller public utilities with limited technology budgets.

The legislation would still require congressional approval.
