Man charged with credit card fraud

IPOH: A jobless man has been charged in the magistrate’s court here with impersonating a credit card owner.

Loh Kok Meng, 36, was alleged to have used a MyKad belonging to Chong Chee Choong to claim a Citibank credit card from the Pos Laju office in Jalan Panglima Bukit Gantang Wahab here.

Loh, who claimed trial, allegedly committed the offence at about 11am on Sept 10.

The offence under Section 419 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years, a fine or both, upon conviction.

Magistrate Mohamad Nasrudin Mohamed fixed bail at RM7,000 with one surety and Nov 9 for the case to be re-mentioned.

Loh was not represented.

Outside the court, Ipoh commercial crimes investigating officer Insp Soh Sheng Siong said the other suspect picked up in the case was on police bail and would be called as a witness.

On Thursday, Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Shukri Dahlan told a press conference that two suspects had been detained over the scam.

He said both suspects would masquerade as genuine cardholders and call up banks to lodge reports over missing credit cards before requesting for a replacement.

Using forged MyKads, they would claim the cards before going on a spending spree.
