Despite a ban on smartphones and other connected devices in the dugout and on the field, Major League Baseball (MLB) won’t be barring players and managers from wearing the Apple Watch during games. The issue recently came up when Kansas City Royals manager Ned Yost was seen wearing his Apple Watch — which the MLB gifted to him — during a game. It had been reported that the MLB would ban the Apple Watch after speaking with Yost, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. From MarketWatch:
After concerns were raised during the game about whether Yost wearing an Apple Watch in the dugout gave his team an unfair advantage over its less-connected adversaries, Major League Baseball told MarketWatch it is not banning smartwatches during games.
The MLB’s ban on internet-connected devices in the dugout remains in effect, but the Apple Watch is safe for now because it doesn’t offer any form of unfair advantage without being connected to a nearby iPhone. In other words, since iPhones aren’t allowed in the dugout or on the field, players and coaches can’t use an Apple Watch to check out any data that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.
