New Kwanzaa stamp to be unveiled at MOJA Festival

 Kwanzaa USPS stamp to be unveiled at MOJA FestivalIn conjunction with the MOJA Arts Festival, the United States Postal Service will celebrate the First Day of Issue of the new Kwanzaa Forever Stamp designed by world renowned artist, Synthia SAINT JAMES, along with art director Greg Breeding, on October 1, 2016, at 12:30 p.m.  The program will take place at Marion Square Park located at 329 Meeting Street.

Synthia SAINT JAMES, who was also commissioned to design the first Kwanzaa Commemorative Stamp released in 1997, will be the guest speaker on the program along with local dignitaries.  Dr. SAINT JAMES is a multicultural award winning visual artist, author, educator and speaker.

The Kwanzaa stamp features an African-American woman holding a purple bowl filled with fruits and vegetables, symbolizing the abundance of African first-harvest celebrations. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Kwanzaa holiday (1966-2016) created by Dr. Maulana Karenga to celebrate and reaffirm family, community, and culture. The seven-day holiday is celebrated from December 25th through January 1st.
