NEW YORK — A police officer committed suicide Thursday night while responding to a call in Queens, the NYPD said.

Investigators say the 28-year-old officer was arguing with his girlfriend on the phone minutes prior to the shooting, according to CBS New York. His name is being withheld.

The officer and his partner were in the area looking into a series of car break-ins, authorities said.

Neighbors in Hollis Hills heard a single shot and reportedly saw the officer lying in the street, according to the New York Daily News. He was transported to Long Island Jewish Medical Center where he died, police said.
