Chhatra Dal men fled the scene hearing ambulance siren, claims Chhatra League

BNP’s student body Chhatra Dal has claimed that 19 leaders and activists of its Dhaka University unit were injured when the members of Chhatra League carried out an attack on its procession on the campus.

“Chhatra League men swooped on us with bamboo sticks, brick-bats and metal rods while we were marching towards the TSC from Shaheed Minar on Sunday morning in presence of the law enforcers, who remained as calm as spectators,” DU unit Chhatra Dal Convener Rakibul Islam Rakib said.

From a press conference held at Dhaka University Journalists’ Association office, he urged the authorities concerned to take necessary steps to prevent such incidents in the campus area.

Central leaders of the ruling party’s student body refuted the allegation of attack as baseless.

According to the Chhatra Dal men, the incident took place around 10am in front of the BNCC building (Rumi Bhaban), from where they brought out a procession demanding immediate release of its two central leaders – Organizing Secretary Saif Mahmud Jewel and Assistant Organizing Secretary Moshiur Rahman Roni.

Rakib claimed that 19 persons including Chhatra Dal DU unit Member Secretary Amanullah Aman, DU convening committee members and hall unit leaders were taken to different hospitals including Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

“Chhatra League carried out this heinous attack being influenced by Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader’s speech. This student organization does not believe in democracy much like its mother organization, Awami League,” Rakib said.

On the other hand, Chhatra League General Secretary Lekhak Bhattacharjee said: “No Chhatra League activists attacked the protest march. This is nothing but an attempt to tarnish Chhatra League’s image.”

According to Lekhak, Chhatra League activists were busy with distributing aid to daily wage earners.

“After we finished our program, we passed by the protest march and heard the noise of an ambulance or something like that. They got scared and fled. Now they’re blaming the Chhatra League,” Lekhak told the media.

Proctor Prof AKM Golam Rabbani said that the Chhatra Dal leaders had not taken permission to stage a protest.

“Why will the university authorities take responsibility for this attack?” he added.

Asked whether other organizations take permission for any program inside the campus, the proctor furthered: “We are not permitting any organization to carry out any sort of political activities [on the campus].”
