SPRINGFIELD – Staff with the Hampden District Attorney’s Office have donated more than $10,000 to purchase Christmas gifts for 50 children who are victims of child abuse or in foster care.

The DA’s Office for the last several years has teamed up with the Massachusetts Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Children to provide gifts on Christmas day for children who might otherwise not get anything.

The society identified 50 children in need, and each child was asked to fill out a wish list. Staff with the DA’s Office then try to find items on each child’s list. Gifts are then wrapped and delivered to each child by Christmas morning. Wish list items include toys and necessary items like socks, shoes and winter jackets.

The average spending on each child is more than $200 this year.

Most of the children in the program were either identified as victims of child abuse or have been removed from their families and placed in foster care.

“I am so proud of the many members of my staff who have stepped forward and exhibited such generosity for these children,” Gulluni said. “The kids involved in this initiative come from difficult circumstances and this helps give them a joyful experience during the holiday season. This is what the season is all about. ”
