Cyber attacks ‘a form of bullying’ designed to ‘announce a presence’

Cyber Security Expert Richard Buckland says current attacks are “almost a form of bullying” arguing they do not seem as if they’re designed to cause “immediate disruption” but rather to “announce their presence”.

“It’s certainly not that our security’s good enough. If anything, these attacks are showing great gaping gaps in our security,” Mr Buckland said.

“They’re against things we’ve known about for a long time and the government’s advised people to fix for a long time.

“A lot of these attacks are just about gaining data. They’re not about doing things, they’re sort of setting up and getting ready to do things and announcing their capabilities to do things.”

Mr Buckland said the attacks are a “good wake up call” for Australia arguing one day “this won’t be innocent but rather war”.
