The internet, as insightful and interesting a tool it might be, can sometimes be a very dark place with the steep increase in online abuse and trolling, especially against women. On many occasions, we have noticed Sonam C Chhabra – Live Host and Digital Content Creator raising her voice against all forms of online sexual abuse and harassment.
Recently with the unraveling of the Instagram chat group called Bois Locker Room, it spread chills across the country with the unveiled conversations of young boys discussing abuse against girls familiar to them. Sonam was quick to condemn such heinous activity and was soon involved in a discussion with Delhi Commission for Women’s Chairperson, Swati Maliwal to bring greater awareness among the young girls to not to succumb to such abuse and the ways to take these activities on through stricter protocols punishable by law and how social media platforms should be held accountable in the regulation of such actions and their timely exposure to law and order.
She recently has been a part of a campaign against online abuse and trolling against women, kickstarted by Malini Agarwal from Malini and Ignore No More is a campaign that includes celebrities and influencers from across the country who have been very vocal about cyberbullying and want to make the internet safer and more supportive work and fun space for everyone. As a part of this campaign, Sonam emphasized the internet being her workspace and she needs it to clean off the perverted and demoralizing comments and trolling.
In this powerful video, Sonam can be seen addressing the perversion on social media. She says, “The perversion and abuse on social media. Trolls as they are called have assumed to have power over others just because they can remain faceless, nameless and traceless. They abuse you down in the comments and then creep into the DM’s to convey their disgusting and cringe-worthy thoughts. Yes, they are disgusting enough to cause enough trauma. It’s time they are brought to notice and disciplined about this criminal offense”.
The third strike was recently when an online video surfaced against a known female comedian who was threatened with sexual abuse without the clear fear of law and order. Devastated and aghast by such content floating around with the amount of support it received in the name of a free speech she decided to talk against it. With the swift action of law and order from Gujarat Police, the culprit was in no time arrested and was pressed charges against.Sonam C Chhabra, has taken upon this mantle of leadership against online sexual abuse and cyberbullying against women which are no longer the reason to be less threatened and aware of. A noble initiative nonetheless, there is a long way to go before the complete eradication and weeding off of such elements and influential voices like her will give strength to many who have fallen prey to it.
