Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland was on a “full lockdown” at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday after the Air Force said two gunmen off the base fired shots toward the installation from near the Valley Hi gate.

“There were trainees in the area and the shooters fled the scene on foot,” the 502nd Air Base Wing said in a brief statement. “JBSA emergency responders are working with the San Antonio Police Department to clear the area and search for the shooters. “

In ordering the lockdown, the Air Force said those on the base should shelter in place until given further guidance.

The Air Force issued an “Active Shooter warning” for all JBSA-Lackland personnel in a tweet Wednesday afternoon.

“All base personnel implement LOCKDOWN procedures immediately and take cover,” the Air Force said in it tweet. “Real World LOCKDOWN, LOCKDOWN, LOCKDOWN.”

No details are available about the shooter or whether there have been any casualties at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, which is home to Air Force basic training.

The lockdown is expected to cause increased traffic and delays at gates on the installation.

The San Antonio Express-News initially learned of the lockdown after a person familiar with the situation said an active shooter was on the base and that it was not a drill.

San Antonio police reported a shooting in progress in the 100 block of Valley Hi Drive at 12:23 p.m. A recruit training dormitory is in the same area.

Lackland is the home of Air Force basic training, and also provides an array of technical school instruction for airmen and foreign military students. It has been the scene one at least one shooting incident over the past 5½ years.
