JACKSON, MI – Starting in 2012, the amount of drug-related deaths per year in Jackson County started to rise steadily, according to Drug Free Jackson.
That year, there were 15 deaths, and the number increased to 79 in 2017.
While deaths fell to 44 in 2018, Jackson College is still addressing the problem head-on by hosting its sixth annual Substance Abuse Night forum from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23.
The event is in rooms 144-145 in Bert Walker Hall, 2111 Emmons Road. College and community members are invited to learn about the physiological effects opioids and alcohol have on the body, as well as local efforts to battle addiction.
The main event is a guest panel featuring Jackson County Circuit Court Judge John G. McBain; Golden Gibson, owner of South Street Salvage & Body Works, and Dr. John Maino, an emergency doctor at Henry Ford Allegiance Health.
The event is free, and refreshments are being served. The Christian Student Club at Jackson College is sponsoring the night.
