Iowa City, Iowa (KWWL) – The Hawkeyes have announced their Kid Captain for this Saturday’s game against Northwestern will be 10-year-old Lucy Roth, of Iowa City.  Lucy has received multiple surgeries and treatments at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Lucy’s health issues were first noticed when she was just 2-years-old.  Her parents thought Lucy might have vision problems.  After initial tests didn’t reveal anything, they brought her to the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital.  Doctors ordered an MRI and a massive tumor was found.

Neurosurgeons removed part of the tumor.  Unfortunately, Lucy had a stroke during surgery which left her paralyzed on her right side.  Additionally, the remaining tumor was found to be cancerous.

Lucy underwent two years of chemotherapy, 33 days of radiation, another brain surgery and eight other surgeries.  This, along with eight years of physical and occupational therapies, is a lot for any child to go through.  But Lucy has done it with determination and strength, making her the perfect choice to be a Kid Captain.

Lucy says she wants to be an artist or a teacher one day.

KWWL congratulates Lucy on being a Kid Captain.  Have fun at the game Saturday, Lucy!  And go Hawkeyes!
