2011/10/21

KUALA LUMPUR: The domestic trade, cooperative and consumerism ministry seized 219 pirated software worth about RM1.5 million in the city this year.

The seizures followed 11 raids on corporate software users by the ministry’s Kuala Lumpur department, said its director, Abu Samah Shahbudin.

He said the department also seized 49 computers, together with its peripherals.

“The companies involved were those in mechanical engineering, architectural and interior design, integrated marketing solutions and computer retailers,” he told a press conference at his office here today.

He said among the pirated software seized were business software for photo editing, computer-aided design, animation, anti-virus protection, operating
system and word processing belonging to Business Software Alliance (BSA) member
companies such as Adobe, Autodesk and Microsoft.

Abu Samah said, under the Copyright Act 1987, if a company was found guilty
of possessing, other than for private and domestic use, infringing copies
of computer programmes, the company and its directors were liable to a fine of
between RM2,000 to RM20,000 for each infringed copy of software and/or a prison
sentence up to five years. – Bernama
