Goshen — Police officers discovered a man hacking through copper pipes at an unoccupied residence in Goshen.

On Jan. 10, 2010 at approximately 2:50 p.m., Town of Goshen Police observed tire tracks in the snow leading into the driveway of an unoccupied residence at 78 Maple Avenue. Upon further investigation a subject identified as John J. Woloszynowski, age 47, of 12 Cedar St., Middletown, New York, was observed by Officer David Ramsey with a hacksaw cutting copper heating pipes from the interior of the building. A 2007 Dodge Dakota pickup truck registered to Woloszynowski’s wife was located, which contained approximately 300 pounds (scrap value $400) of copper tubing in the bed of the truck. Further investigation determined that Woloszynowski did not have permission of the owner to be there nor did he have permission to remove any items from the property. Examination of the interior indicated previous removal activity.

Woloszynowski was taken into custody and charged with Burglary 3rd Degree (Felony), Grand Larceny 4th Degree (felony), Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree (felony), and Possession of Burglars Tools (misdemeanor). He was arraigned before Judge Thomas Cione and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail pending Grand Jury action.

Release was prepared and approved by Chief Dennis Marsh TGPD.

Theft of copper tubing on the rise

Over the past two years, law enforcement agencies and utility companies have seen a dramatic rise in the theft of copper wiring and refrigeration copper tubing from businesses and utility facilities. The destruction does $3,000 in damages for $25 worth of scrap copper.

This is being blamed on the surge in scrap copper prices brought on by Chinese demand for the metal in that country’s modernization drive. In this country, some see it as a threat to national security: homegrown insurgents targeting the infrastructure, to the detriment of all.
