CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — A retired New York cop whose homeowner’s association said to remove a commemorative 9/11 flag has won the battle to display it.
According to a letter the homeowner’s association sent to Ground Zero responder Richard Wentz, the flag detracted from the aesthetic harmony of the neighborhood. Furthermore, an ordinance restricted displaying more than one flag at a time, and Wentz was given 10 days to remove it. Bill Sugarman, president of the company that manages Wentz’s neighborhood, asked for a review of the policy, according to ABC News, and the association decided not to enforce the rule.
"It’s really not their duty to encourage that restriction," Sugarman said. "Mr. Wentz will be permitted to fly his flag."
Wentz, who responded at Ground Zero on 9/11, could have been fined up to $1,000, but was unwilling to back down. He was prepared to pay, he said, to keep the memories of the fallen alive.
Wentz said he lost 43 friends that day and suffers cancer from exposure to toxins at the site.
