Security experts who claim that the Royal Navy is unprepared to fend off a cyber attack have called for the government to provide more training to combat the increasing dangers posed by hackers, SC Magazine has reported. Researchers at the University of Lancaster have found that maritime systems are particularly vulnerable to attacks due to ageing computer systems and a lack of training. The nature of navies, and all shipping companies, means that long periods away from land makes it difficult to update antiquated maritime systems. Security consultant Brian Honan said: “What the [Lancaster] report highlights is that many ships use Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 – one of which Microsoft has stopped supporting, and one Microsoft is about to stop supporting. And because ships are at sea a lot, it’s not always easy to replace antiquated systems. It’s a problem faced by private companies too.” According to the report, the fact that 95% of goods are conveyed by sea makes shipping a tempting target for cyber criminals.
