MEMPHIS — Authorities say a Memphis police sergeant has been arrested, more than three weeks after he was shot and allegedly told investigators a false story about the incident.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman stated in a news release that Sgt. Norman Benjamin was arrested Wednesday and charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder, false reporting, and unlawful sale, loan or gift of a firearm.
Benjamin was shot Sept. 3. He told investigators he was shot in his car by a Hispanic male and police began looking for the suspect. Police Director Toney Armstrong later said investigators believed Benjamin misled them and he actually had been shot during a domestic argument by a woman. The woman was charged with attempted second-degree murder, but those charges were later dropped.
