Tazewell County prosecutors are now pursuing three cases alleging thousands of dollars in thefts from aging victims by their own relatives with the latest filed last week. Tina Roten, 37, was charged with using her stepmother’s birth date, Social Security number and maiden name to obtain a credit card. She ran up more than $10,150 in charges on the card between last June and January, her charge alleges. Roten of Peoria was issued a notice to appear May 10 on a charge of aggravated identity theft, punishable by probation to up to seven years in prison. Her 63-year-old alleged victim, a Tazewell County resident, didn’t know of the credit card Roten obtained until January, when she learned her credit rating was unexpectedly low, according to a prosecutor’s court affidavit. After the card company told police what information was used to obtain it, Roten acknowledged she used the card “for daily living expenses,” the affidavit stated. In the two other pending cases, elderly victims were allegedly robbed by family members they had entrusted with their savings.
