NEW YORK (TheStreet) — Former U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay has been sentenced to three years in prison for his involvement in illegally funneling $190,000 in corporate money to Texas candidates through a money swap in 2002.
The sentence comes after DeLay was convicted on money laundering and conspiracy charges in November.
DeLay received three years on the conspiracy charge and five years on the money laundering charge. He will be allowed to serve 10 years probation with community service on the laundering charge.
Judge Pat Priest remanded DeLay into custody and set a $10,000 bail pending appeal.
The conservative Republican was once one of the most powerful people in U.S. politics. He held the No. 2 position in the House of Representatives.
DeLay told the judge in a statement that he believes that the prosecution was politically motivated and that he did not intend to break the law.
“I can’t be remorseful for something I don’t think I did,” DeLay said.
