Valentine’s Day is just days away but if you’re looking for love on a mobile dating app, watch out. Hackers want your data to be their Valentine. A research study by IBM found that “over 60 percent of the leading dating apps studied are vulnerable to medium and/ or severe vulnerabilities that put application data, as well as data stored on the device, at risk.” Such vulnerabilities, IBM noted, can affect the use of these dating apps in many ways that potential hackers could not only modify stored data on the app but also leak information from the device. The data was compiled from 41 dating apps available in the Google Play app store in October 2014. And a 2013 Pew research study found that one in 10 Americans have used a dating site or app, and 66 percent of people have dated someone they met online. Those numbers are only going up. So how harmful can it be if your dating app, which contains so much personal information, gets hacked? Terrible!
