What’s up with that job?

What does an ethical hacker do all day?

Instead of hacking into computer systems to steal or cause mayhem, an ethical hacker helps companies and organizations identify weaknesses in their computer networks and security systems. They work for major firms, universities and even the armed forces.

What kind of cash are we talking about?

Depending on the job and level of experience, ethical hackers can earn from $60K to $100K a year, or even more.

What do you have to do to get this job?

Some firms require degrees; others (including the Department of Defense) may require that you pass a certification exam devised by the Council of E-Commerce Consultants. As a general rule, proven ability is the most important qualification in this field.

OK, tell me the bad part.

Not much, other than the alternate job title that may get you some snickers at cocktail parties: Penetration Tester.

What’s the upside?

Daily challenges, great pay, and an opportunity to beat the system on a daily basis — for a computer hacker, what’s not to love? Ethical hackers also provide a valuable service to businesses and organizations.
