BitDefender launches malware scanner for Twitter

Security firm BitDefender has launched security software for micro-blogging service Twitter that will identify which of a user’s contacts are a security threat.

BitDefender Safego, which is currently in beta, features a Contact Safety Rainbow that trawls your followers and gives them one of four colour ratings based on their threat levels. Any followers flagged as red are considered highly suspicious and may be spreading malware, spam or being used for phishing.

Furthermore, once installed the app will continue to scan your account and notify you by direct message of any threats. However, a Scan on Demand feature means you can check an account before you start following it.

Bitdefender Safego will also scan direct messages for spam and malicious links, as well as messages sent as a result of account highjacking.

“Packing the award-winning Bitdefender technology and relying on the extensive experience acquired in social scam detection, Bitdefender Safego proactively fights social scams, spam, phishing and other e-threats by identifying new and recurrent social threat behaviour,” the company said.

A version of the software was previously launched for Facebook.

BitDefender Safego for Twitter is free to download from the firm’s dedicated website.
