Hacker believed responsible in $14,000 scam targeting Des Moines-area credit union

Des Moines police say a local credit union wired $14,000 to a bank in Australia after someone apparently hacked into the email account of one of the credit union’s customers.

The customer has been reimbursed for the loss and Financial Plus Credit Union is trying to recover the money it wired to the other side of the world, police said.

It’s not known how the customer’s email account was hacked, police said. Someone emailed the credit union, pretending to be the customer and asked that the money be wired to Australia to cover funeral expenses for a nephew. The credit union obliged.

It turned out the nephew was in good health and he did not live in Australia.

A spokesman for Financial Plus Credit Union declined comment.
