Malware Madness: Stuxnet torches Christmas Tree; Melissa surprises
We’re only a quarter of the way through the first round, and Malware Madness has had its first upset — albeit a narrow one.
In voting by GCN readers asked to choose the greater of two evils among famous malware programs, the 9th-seeded Melissa virus, the one-time scourge of e-mail servers, topped 8th-seeded upstart DNSChanger, which still is haunting some PCs around the world.
Meanwhile, top-seeded and totally new-school Stuxnet trounced 16th-seeded Christmas Tree EXEC, a venerable, old-school program, as it were, whose salad days have passed.
A No. 9 seed beating a No. 8, admittedly, is not much of an upset, but the madness is just getting started. The next bracket of Round One is under way now. Will Anna Kournikova bedazzle 5th seeded Nimda? Does the Morris Worm still have the moves to take down 4th-seeded Code Red?
