Man charged in shooting threat against University of Chicago

A Chicago man was arrested Monday after allegedly threatening to shoot students at the University of Chicago, which prompted a cancellation of classes and events.

Jabari Dean, 21, is being charged with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Northern District of Illinois said in a statement. Dean was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

Multiple reports indicated that Dean is an engineering student at another local school, the University of Illinois at Chicago. That school said earlier Monday that one of its students living off-campus was arrested.

Federal agents said Dean posted a threat over the holiday weekend that he would execute approximately 16 white students or staff members at the University of Chicago on Monday, with a screenshot of the threat provided to the FBI.
